Twenty One Pilots. Single handedly THE best show to shoot (in my opinion at least). I met the guys at the very first Alternative Press Music Award Show in 2014. A few months later they were playing a sold out show in Nashville to about 1,000 people. I sent Josh an email and he connected me with their creative director Mark Eshleman who you may know better as Reel Bear Media. Mark is an awesome and very talented, hard working guy. He took care of me for the day, and I got some great shots. Fast forward almost exactly a year later, and they’re set in St. Louis on Halloween to 7,500 in an arena.
I reached out and made my way to St. Louis. This show is a photographers dream. The energy they bring is unmatched, and their set design is phenomenal. I had an office space to myself near the green rooms which helped a ton so I didn’t have to haul all of my gear around on my back. Plus I had a space to edit after the show!
The only two people shooting past the first three songs were Mark and I. Mark shot video, and I shot all of the photos for the night. It’s a great feeling to be trusted like that by people that you have so much respect for. Not to mention to be trusted by a whole crew to not accidentally kick a wire on stage and ruin the show. I know that sounds weird, but trust me, there are a lot of wires to avoid falling over. To put it into perspective this was the second headlining arena show they’ve played on their Blurryface tour. The first was in their hometown. It was also the LAST show of the tour in the US. So there were a lot of things that made this show special, and I was very happy to be a part of it.
Now, there are a TON of photos in this blog post. I love that I have a blog now because normally 95% of these photos would never see the light of day, and I’m glad that I have a space to share them. I’ve also laid them out in the exact order that they were taken. Hope you enjoy!
Normally there are two ‘hazmat’ people that come out on stage, but Finish Ticket decided to prank Josh and Tyler by adding a few more to the show.
The famous drum boat
I like these shots of Josh because they give you a good feel of their view. Plus you can see their red floor on the entire stage. Everything about the show is thought out so well!
I love the microphone that’s hanging down. The end of it glows from the inside. So cool!
Unfortunately during most jumps I was running around backstage, but I did manage to snag this. Tyler gets up there!
Josh left the stage for a short period of time, and we snagged a quick shot.
Lastly I shot the ‘end of tour’ photos with all of the bands posing together. I thought you might like the goofy ones!
