Last week was a little crazy. Well, really crazy. I flew from New York to Cleveland a few days before the APMAS, and then flew down to Kentucky to spend a week home with family and friends. Good times all around! This year I was in charge of all studio photos at the award show. What does this mean? I was set up in the basement of the State Theatre and took portraits of winners, bands, etc. The music world is kind of a crazy thing to be a part of just to witness the staggering number of moving parts that go into something like this. Needless to say on my end it was fast paced, high pressure, and went of without a hitch. This year was one of my favorites even though I was too busy shooting under the stage to see the show. I tried running up stairs to peak at it, but had to rush back down to shoot an artist. Like I said, fast paced.
Hands down the best part is being able to see so many friends from all walks of the industry. It’s a small world so when it gets together it feels like no time has passed since you last saw each other. I included a few of my favorite photos from the event below starting with a few shots from the red carpet. Hope you enjoy!
The host of the evening, Andy Biersack and his wife Juliet Simms.
The man himself, Benji of Good Charlotte
Gwar. Just … Gwar. Crazy as they look.
I don’t know if this little dude made it down the whole carpet, but damn he was cute and definitely hated the flashing lights and screaming fans
Kay Enagonio has been killing the game with AP on Warped Tour this summer. Great hanging again!
Easily one of the best outfits from the carpet…
…Only second to Waterparks’
My third tour ever was with I See Stars. Great seeing the boys again!
Silvertooth + Security. Totally legit.
A legend … Machine Gun Kelly
I don’t know how Ded rocks those eye pieces, but its creepy as hell
This is Cydnee. She was assisting me for the day and killed it. You have her to thank for all of the behind the scenes photos as well!
Ok, now for the studio. In this simple setup I had a pair of Profoto D2’s, a 5ft octa bank as the key, and one edge light with a 20 degree grid. Simple, fast, clean. To make things move smoothly I was shooting tethered into Lightroom using a Tethered Tools cord. Each time I snapped a frame, it went right into Lightroom and a custom preset was automatically applied. This made my life so. much. better. I highly recommend shooting tethered in a situation like this.
Always good seeing this bunch. All Time Low.
My friend Matt Vogel is out with ATL and stepped into the studio. He’s a very talented photographer and an even better dude.
Chris “Grizzlee” Martin and Cydnee. Chris and I have shot every Alternative Press Award Show to date. He’s a good dude, and will trick you into believing he’s Jack Black.
Against Me! Met James at the airport while waiting for a Lyft. Days like that are funny because you never know who you’ll bump into.
Ash and William Control
Set It Off rockin that blue as always! Good seeing these guys again.
Lizzy Hale of Halestorm. She’s a great spirit and always fun to be around.
Being serious isn’t always so easy when you’re having fun, but sometimes those moments end up being the best shots.
The progression of these photos was too funny not to include
These guys taught me how to be British for a minute
John Feldman with One Ok Rock. Amazing duo right there.
Too. Close. To. Touch. The hometown homies from Lexington, Kentucky. Always rooting for them, and always great to see them! When you come from a small town it’s a very good feeling to see your friends out here with you. Proud of these dudes.
Had some great conversations with Lights and Beau. Happy to see good people doing well!
Again, the in-between moments are the best
Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness
The Plain White T’s
Was not expecting to see this when I turned around. I don’t even know what this was for, but it was hilarious. Miss May I is a group with some of the best people I’ve met. And being an Ohio band their hometown home isn’t too far from mine.
The boys stopped by later to get a photo
Frank Zummo of Sum 41. Something about this photo just makes me happy.
Falling In Reverse
Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour. Always good seeing this dude.
Kevin Lyman, founder of Warped Tour
The never expressive I Prevail. Brian and Eric were on the Warped Tour cover of Alternative Press that I had shot just two months before this so it was good seeing these guys again.
Laura Jane Grace
Lynn Gunn + Laura Jane Grace + Mina Caputo
All of the kids who performed alongside Sleeping With Sirens at the show. My 12 foot set still wasn’t quite big enough to fit everyone in front of it!
Thanks again for the BTS shots, Cydnee!
Another Warped Tour AP cover star!
Great hangs with Ashley Osborn. The other part of this whole deal is that you get to see a ton of fellow photo friends.
Lynn with Pierce The Veil
Finally the last image of the night, and possibly the largest portrait I’ve take… Pierce The Veil all coupled up. Really happy with this image, and a great way to end a long day!
Thanks for checking out this post! Leave a comment and let me know what you think. Also thank you to AP for always bringing me out to their award show. It’s great to be a part of!
